ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties described below are indicative of what the Health Paraprofessional may be asked to perform. Other duties may be assigned. Most duties are performed on an occasional basis (0 - 33% of shift) unless otherwise noted.
1. Render first aid according to established American Heart Association Standards and Oconomowoc Area School District protocol.
2. Follow appropriate procedures in treating illnesses or injuries under the direction of the Principal or District Nurse and provide crisis response as needed in the gym, classroom, sports field, or other areas of the building. (Performed on a frequent basis or 34 - 66% of shift.)
3. Procure and maintain health room supplies in a clean and orderly manner.
4. Perform general clean up of the health room, including wiping down mat tables between students. Notify buildings and grounds for body fluid cleanups involving blood, or vomit. Use universal precautions as trained and designated by OSHA.
5. Be responsible for scheduling of health room substitutes.
6. Communicate with parents as needed regarding injuries/illnesses.
7. Complete paperwork and computerized records on students’ health, treatment received, immunizations and medications. Maintain and prepare all reports.
8. Maintain a health concerns list of students with special health needs, i.e. epileptics, asthmatic, diabetics, etc. List should be kept in the Emergency Response Bag and shredded at the end of each school year.
9. Prepare health concerns list by teacher at the start of each school year and update by term/semester as necessary.
10. Prepare first-aid kits for field trips including first-aid supplies, emergency information and student medication. Maintain supplies in all field trip bags and emergency bags/checking expiration dates routinely.
11. Perform assigned nursing/health care procedures under the direction and training of the District Nurse, such as, but not limited to: gastrostomy tube care and feeding, administration of medications and insulin, catheterizations, and other procedures as assigned.
12. Make appropriate referrals to District Nurse.
13. Coordinate with the District Nurse on school health screening programs: vision, hearing and head lice.
14. Obtain and maintain standardized health information such as health care plans, emergency care plans, medication consent forms, vision and hearing results, immunization forms, physical and dental reports, accident reports, etc.
15. Treat all information and health records in a confidential manner.
16. Assist staff members, including the transfer of students, as directed by building Principal. This duty will vary among schools, depending on the specific needs of the school and student population.
17. Perform data entry of emergency information for students, screening results and immunizations.
18. Provide general supervision of students in the health room, manage students to maintain appropriate behavior, and dismiss or direct students who have received assistance back to the classroom or designated area.
19. Serve as a member of building’s Emergency Response Team for medical emergencies of students/staff.
20. Perform other duties which relate to the position as assigned by the building Principal or District Nurse. Notification of district nurse in circumstances where the care of a student is outside the scope of what has been delegated and trained upon
21. Attend all Professional Development Day meetings and trainings as directed by Principal/District Nurse.
22. Attend field trips as necessary or as directed by Principal/District Nurse to care for a child with special health needs. This may include trips that extend past the normal work hours. Accommodations for additional wages or alternative days off will be made with the district nurse or building principal.
23. Flexibility to work in other health rooms as needs arise
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
A. High school diploma or equivalent.
B. CPR, AED and first aid training required.
C. Medication administration and other health procedure training to be completed upon hire and on an annual basis per health room needs and directed by District Nurse.
D. Experience typing and operating office equipment required. E. Knowledge of Microsoft programs preferred.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES: I. Technical Skills: The individual must possess the following:
A. The ability to provide first aid/illness care to students.
B. The ability to perform assigned health care procedures such as G-tube feeding, administration of medications, and catheterizations.
C. The ability to communicate injuries/illnesses effectively with parents.
D. The ability to maintain strict confidentiality in all school matters
