English as a Second Language Teacher
Job Summary:
Instrumental in helping speakers of other languages learn how to speak, write and read English. Supervises the English as a Second Language (ESL) program and teaches classes for students of Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach. Trains ESL tutors to work successfully with individual ESL students and monitors outcomes.
Responsibilities:
● Manages the evening ESL program, tailoring curricula to ESL students’ needs and abilities.
● Interviews and evaluates ESL clients and their needs.
● Divides students into leveled classes based on their English language skills.
● Follows ESL lesson plans given from Education Specialists for students.
● Plans for and develops lessons for volunteer ESL teachers.
● Uses questionnaires to gather feedback and input about areas needing improvement in classes and tutor training.
● Matches tutors with students depending on personal preferences and abilities.
● Teaches ESL classes two days a week.
● Ensures ESL class curricula contain necessary life skills such as fire safety.
● Keeps accurate and detailed records for each ESL neighbor.
● Collaborates with other organizations and schools to offer ESL classes and to accept referrals of students to Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach’s ESL classes.
● Procures community speakers on a variety of topics, such as the Fire Department and budgeting, parenting and finance resources.
● Provides interpretation and/or translation services as needed.
● Pre and Post Tests all students.
● Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
● Connects students to community resources.
● Promotes the organization's mission, vision, and values, treating all people with dignity and respect.
Skills and Qualifications :
● Must know how to work with students and adults who are learning English for the first time.
● Must be able to adapt instructional techniques and find creative ways to interpret information to meet the students' diverse needs.
● Excellent classroom management abilities.
● Superior interpersonal skills.
● Volunteer management experience is a plus.
Education/Certifications:
Bachelor's in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or related field.

FLSA Status
Part Time, non-exempt
Schedule
This position is a part-time, hourly position for an average of 6 hours per week, with the schedule to be mutually agreed upon by the Director of Education & Career Services and the team member.
Days/hours will be Tuesday and Thursday, from 5:30p.m. to 8:30p.m. during education semesters August-December & February-May. Additional hours may be required during peak times, which may require an adjusted work schedule; all work hours above standard hours must have pre-approval of the supervisor.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
Work is performed in a fast‐paced and sometimes stressful, professional office environment with noise at moderate levels.
Position requires the team member to effectively use a computer at a workstation for long periods of time and to accommodate potentially frequent interruptions. Must be able to lift 10-15 pounds.
