Field Survey Crew Chief

This position will set-up and operate equipment and instruments used at job sites to measure, record, and calculate data for all types of survey projects including ALTA Surveys, Boundary, Topographic, Construction Staking, and Right of Way Surveys, and 3D mapping/LiDAR support. Provide communications with Survey Coordinator and Survey Project Managers, manage field data, maintain field notes and files, and review final drawings.
Position Summary
The Survey Crew Chief will be utilizing GPS, total station, and data collector instruments to perform field survey tasks. Carry out a variety of survey field work including establishing horizontal/vertical control, topographic surveying, property boundary surveys and construction staking. This position will involve working as a solo crew chief as well as part of a team. Occasional CAD work (including simple survey drafting or calculations) or ancillary duties may be performed as an assist to field duties and project manager.
Essential Job Functions
- Follow required safety standards and guidelines.
- Be safety driven. Maintain a good driving record.
- The crew chief oversees and is responsible for the daily field operations of a survey crew by demonstrating an attitude for safety, cost control, efficiency, and professionalism including mentoring as required
- Use and understand survey equipment such as total stations, GPS, LiDAR and data collectors.
- Read and interpret construction drawings/specifications and understand all aspects of the project specifications and tolerances
- Operate and maintain all surveying and data collection instruments and complete calibration checks
- Research previous survey evidence, maps, deeds, physical evidence, and other records to obtain data needed for surveys
- Perform calculations utilizing calculator, computer or supplied data collectors
- Record the survey results and verify the accuracy of data with proper recorded field checks
- Transmit survey data results, which includes sending data to the home office from remote field locations and prepare daily reports, time sheets, and other required paperwork
- Communicate daily with Project Manager, Crew Coordinator and relevant technicians regarding project schedule and work progress
- Interact professionally and effectively communicate with client representatives, contractors, engineering staff and landowners
- Assist in training of staff on field methods and instrument use and care
- Maintain vehicle and field equipment and ensure truck is fully equipped daily
- Perform work duties including but not limited to: digging holes for monuments, walking on rugged terrain, and obtaining invert information on utilities
- Ability to work independently and balance the workload to accommodate demands of the job to exceed client expectations.
- Anticipate, prevent and solve problems (proactive vs. reactive) within his/her authority.
Experience Requirements
- Have a minimum of 8 years experience surveying; at least 5 years in a crew chief position (preferred).
- AutoCAD experience (preferred).
- Competent in solo surveying work and working as part of a crew.
- Experience with surveying equipment – Some knowledge of GPS and robotic total stations; LiDAR and Trimble.
- Strong communications skills.
- Ability to read and interpret documents in English, such as work orders, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
Professional / Technical Registration / Certification:
*LSIT preferred but not required.
Educational Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in related field is a plus.
