The shifts available are 3p-11p, with a rotating 4 on 2 off schedule.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Work under the supervision of an LPN or RN to perform the following duties:
- Administer and document regularly prescribed medications which the CMA is permitted to administer only after personally preparing those medications to be given to residents.
- Observe and report to the facility charge nurse, all reactions and side-effects of medication commonly administered to nursing facility residents.
- Take and record vital signs prior to administration of medications which could affect or change the vital signs. (Such as pulse taken before Lanoxin given)
- After authorization by a licensed nurse or physician, administer PRN medications. Must document all PRN meds according to policy in all appropriate areas of the medical record, i.e., Medication Administration Record, on Front and back of form.
- Administer oxygen (2-4 liters), per nasal cannula or a non-sealing face mask only in an emergency. Immediately after the emergency, the medication aide shall verbally notify the licensed nurse on duty and appropriately document the activity and notification.
- At discretion of charge nurse, count narcotics, give allowed prescribed narcotics, (schedule IV’s and V’s), document same on individual sheet and medication sheet.
- Apply specifically ordered ophthalmic, optic, and nasal medication. Metered dose inhalers will be given by advanced trained CMA’s.
- May apply topical creams, ointments and lotions as prescribed by physician, excluding treatments to decubitus.
Medication aides must function in accordance with accepted pharmaceutical and nursing practices, and as set forth in residents Plan of Care.
