Job Description:
Position Summary:
A full-time, twelve-month, grant funded position, the Academic Coordinator has primary responsibilities for college advising, parent outreach, and the planning and implementing of a satellite summer residential program. The Academic Coordinator will have supporting responsibilities for a large academic year cross age tutorial program, math and science instructional components, student advising, student recruitment, and cultural enrichment activities. The Academic Coordinator will report to the Director of the Upward Bound Program.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Set up internship component and logistics for La Jolla Science summer residential programs

Coordinator of one of our residential sites (this requires living on-site for 5 weeks)

Coordination of parent outreach efforts

Coordination of our Saturday program logistics

Compile test scores and alumni tracking data for performance reports

Supervision of two tutorial sessions at target high schools each week

Lead the math and science pedagogy training and supervision of college age tutors

Academic advising for a cohort of Upward Bound participants

Provide support for alumni outreach programs coordinated

Development of math and science academic instruction for students during Saturday and summer programs

Coordination of college exploration enrichment activities and trips

Supporting role for all outdoor education, community service, and fine arts enrichment activities

Weekly visits to target schools to follow up with students and teachers
-
Recruitment of new program participants at two Upward Bound high schools each year; this includes presentations, assessment interviews, selection recommendations and, as needed, support for home visits by the director

Manage and update the programs website

Drive students and tutors to various program activities and functions

Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required
Experience:
-
A demonstrated record of successful experience working in educational programs and/or community services targeting students similar to those served by Upward Bound (low income, potential first-generation college-bound students)

Prior experience in a residential summer or year-round program for low income and/or first-generation college-bound students (such as an Upward Bound, Summer Bridge, or MESA Program) preferred

One year of high school or college level teaching experience in math or science preferred

Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
-
Personal and/or professional experience that has generated an understanding of the issues facing the ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic groups served by the Harvey Mudd College Upward Bound Program.

Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office & Google Suites

Bilingual (Spanish or other language spoke in our communities) speaking and writing skills preferred but not required
Licenses/Certifications: Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and driving record acceptable to the College’s automobile insurance carrier, Class B preferred.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the staff member is regularly required to sit; stand use hands and fingers and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The individual must regularly lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Other:
Hours: The regular hours are Tuesday – Friday 9AM-5PM, Saturdays 7:00AM-2:00PM. Hours will vary due to the needs of the department.

This is a grant funded, exempt, full-time, benefits-eligible position.
Salary
The anticipated starting salary is $66,560.00/year.
Reporting:
Reports to the Director for the Upward Bound program.
