Job Location: St. Mary & St. Martha of Bethany Episcopal Church (SMMB)
Job Summary
The Sexton will fulfill a vital role at SMMB by maintaining a clean and welcoming campus and facility; interacting with congregation members, visitors, vendors, and clients courteously; efficiently providing furniture set-up and break-down to make our events possible; and securing and maintaining the building and grounds. The candidate will have a strong work ethic, attention to detail and the ability to perform various maintenance and cleaning tasks.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Reports to the Parish Administrator, under the oversight of the Rector.
- Works with lay volunteers and communicates with contracted vendors.
- Set up and breakdown furniture and equipment for meetings and events as needed.
- Respond to visitors in a courteous and professional manner.
- Clean offices, meeting and worship spaces according to daily, weekly, and monthly schedules.
- Clean restrooms weekly and restock paper and hygiene supplies as needed.
- Wash windows and glass doors. Sweep, vacuum, dust, and mop according to schedule.
- Empty wastebaskets and trash cans; organize and move compost, and recyclables containers to proper locations according to schedule.
- Clean kitchen, including large commercial ovens and refrigerator; operate dishware sanitizers when necessary and maintain upkeep of all kitchen appliances; including icemaker
- Maintain outdoor areas daily, weekly & monthly according to schedule, including sweeping, blowing, washing, and picking up trash.
- Perform routine maintenance task such as changing light bulbs, fixing minor plumbing issues and repairing door locks
- Conduct regular inspections of the building to identify and address maintenance needs
- Maintain and care for church grounds, including mowing lawns, trimming bushes and replacing mulch.
- Maintain floors including carpet cleaning, stripping, and cleaning all floors, polishing tile floors, and power washing outdoor surfaces as needed.
- Use janitorial power equipment such as carpet cleaners, floor buffers, and power washers safely and professionally and properly maintain such equipment ensuring compliance with safety standards.
- Maintain clean storerooms and organize supplies.
- Follow established safety procedures. Update and establish safety procedures where needed.
- Perform special cleaning projects as assigned.
- Read and reply to email communications.
- Attend meetings and trainings as assigned.
- Other tasks as assigned by clergy and staff.
Special Duties – Weddings (compensated directly by wedding party)
- Ensure church is clean and welcoming
- Clean bathrooms before and after wedding ceremony
- Clean church ready for Sunday services after wedding ceremony

Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities
- Alignment with and commitment to the mission, vision, and values of SMMB.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least one year of related janitorial or custodial experience strongly preferred as well as handyperson experience.
- Able to lift 50 pounds and climb stairs and ladders as required. Shifts may occasionally require long periods of being vertical and/or walking.
- Able to communicate verbally and in writing in English; basic computer skills needed to reorder supplies, read, comprehend, and respond to written instructions, schedules, notifications, emails, and spreadsheets.
- Able to perform, on a regular basis, moving tables, stacking chairs, and occasionally move office furniture.
- Able to use cleaning and maintenance materials and equipment safely.
- Able to work cooperatively as a member of a team and independently; able to work tactfully under pressure.
- Able to interact courteously and respectfully with diverse staff, volunteers, congregation members, visitors, vendors, and clients.
- High level of attention to detail.
- Criminal background clearance required post offer.
- Evidence of I-9 employment eligibility is required upon starting date
- Professional reference required
- Physical demands include lifting, carrying, bending, and working in various weather conditions.

This is a part-time position of 15-19 hours/week

- Able to work with a variable work schedule, depending on the season and events on the SMMB calendar
- Working hours should be arranged with the Rector to accommodate responsibilities without the need to exceed 19 hours on any regular basis
- Vacation time, holidays and days off are expected to be observed to promote physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and well-being.
- The position requires flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed for church events and services.
