Permit Technician

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides information at the permit counter, by telephone, and through correspondence in response to relatively routine questions regarding building regulations, permit applications and permitting procedures; takes messages and forwards calls to the appropriate party for disposition; distributes paperwork to appropriate staff.
Accepts existing residential and commercial building plans and documents for permit processing, and calculates fees for plan reviews, building, plumbing, gas, mechanical, electrical, and other types of regulatory permits; verifies addresses for plan submittals with the Planning department and submits completed documents to Plan Reviewer.
Enters permit data into computer; reviews applications for completion and proper documentation; issues permits upon approval and notifies appropriate parties.
Prepares and maintains permit files, forms, and reports; utilizes information systems in the processing, filing and managing records associated with applications, permits, and other systems as required; researches open record requests.
Assists the public in completing applications and other necessary forms; follows up with public on incomplete applications.
Assists Building Inspectors with permit information; coordinates inspections and notifies Inspectors when permits have been issued.
Collects fees and prepares receipts; prepares financial reports and balances cash drawer for accounting; processes permit refund requests.
Coordinates the maintenance and repair of department office equipment; performs minor equipment maintenance and maintains supplies.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in administrative support work involving contact with the public, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Starting hourly rate based on experience, education and higher-level certifications
