Hearth is a non-profit organization dedicated to the elimination of homelessness among the elderly. This mission is accomplished through a unique blend of prevention, placement, and housing programs all designed to help elders find and succeed in homes of their own. Overview
The Staff Accountant plays a critical role in supporting the financial operations at Hearth. This position is integral to ensuring the accuracy, timeliness, and compliance of accounting processes, and is responsible for a wide range of accounting activities including financial reporting, grant and contract tracking and management, cash flow management, and additional accounting functions. Reporting directly to the Controller, this role is key to the smooth financial operations of Hearth.
Summary of Job Responsibilities and Requirements
- Independently handles routine and specific accounting tasks as directed by the Controller.
- Manages accounts payable and receivable, recording transactions and accruals, and orchestrates the weekly payment of invoices.
- Utilizes accounting software and IT systems to maximize efficiency and accuracy in financial duties.
- Ensures precise and timely application of grant and contract funds in compliance with stipulations.
- Oversees and compiles financial reporting and supporting schedules as required by funders.
- Maintains meticulous records for contract correspondence and documentation, including renewals and ongoing negotiations.
- Prepares timely contract billings and drawdown packages, adhering to scheduled requirements.
- Commits to the highest ethical standards and aligns work with generally accepted accounting principles for nonprofits, reflecting Hearth's mission and values.
- Provide guidance to program staff in the development of budgets for grants and contract applications
- Develop and maintain systems of allocating expenses to contracts to support contract billing
- Manage and review all funder required financial reporting and supporting schedules per award agreements
- Maintain records for correspondence and documentation to established contracts, renewal of contracts, or those in progress
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Key Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities
- A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business or a related field is strongly preferred, or a comparable combination of education and experience.
- At least two years of experience in accounting or bookkeeping, including strong working knowledge and understanding of GAAP accounting, and financial reconciliations; understands the chart of accounts, trial balance, and balance sheet.
- Advanced working knowledge of Excel, including proficient use in developing formulas and the ability to link workbooks
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), Teams or Zoom for teleconferencing, as well as the use of general office equipment.
- Prior experience in nonprofit and/or grant accounting is advantageous.
- Well-versed in accounting software and non-profit accounting theories and practices.
