Angell Animal Medical Center is a nonprofit Boston institution and has been servicing greater New England for over 100 years with a long standing tradition for excellence and dedication to animals and people, caring for approximately 80,000+ animals a year. Angell is a 24 hours full service facility. The dermatology service in Jamaica plain handles 2500+ appointments annually
The Dermatology Technician is responsible for assisting the Veterinarian of Dermatology and for ensuring consistent and effective delivery of out-patient and in-patient services to patients seen through the dermatology service. The Dermatology Technician works collaboratively with their assigned veterinarian, other staff veterinarians and the entire Angell support staff to provide Angell clientele with excellent clinical and customer service. These services include providing technical support in the examination room with outpatient and in-patient procedures, assisting with case management of animals admitted to the hospital, assisting with technical procedures, and communications with clients.
The Dermatology Technician assists the veterinarian in clinic, surgery, and in other areas of the hospital.
Responsibilities Include:
- Providing support in the examination room, client education, collection and staining of skin and ear samples.
- Interpretation of cytologies and skin scrapes (training will be provided for this), venipuncture, sedation.
- Preparation of client discharge statements, client communication, and animal restraint and handling.
- Performing simple lab tests; PCV, TS; one touch glucose; labeling of lab samples.
- Assists the veterinarian during surgery or procedures involving sedation including laparoscopic scoping of ears, flushing of middle ears/biopsy of masses, CO2 laser ablation, diode laser ablation, intradermal allergy testing, cryo-freezing procedures and small focal mass removals.
- Monitors patient during procedures requiring sedation (minimal incidences of this, most cases go through our anesthesia service).
- Dermatology Technicians will also have the opportunity to assist in the teaching of other veterinary staff members (interns) and externs through rounds, wet labs and lectures.
Qualified Applicant Requirements:
- At least 2-3 years of veterinary technician/assistant experience preferred but not required, 1 year of client service experience preferred
- To be hired as a technician the candidate must be a certified veterinary technician, CVT. The minimum level of education requirement for the CVT level of this position is an Associate of Science in Veterinary Technology or related fields such as Biology (Graduates of AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology program preferred).
- Previous work experience in a, multi-veterinary hospital, emergency/referral practice or veterinary teaching hospital is preferred.
