POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Clinical Manager and within a multi-disciplinary team, this position will be responsible for assessment, care, and education of patients in the primary care setting. This position will assure compliance with all the policies/procedures of the NHBP Health Department, OSHA guidelines, IHS-OSHA guidelines, CLIA regulations, and all appropriate regulatory agencies. The Medical Assistant may be required to participate in the training of new employees, students and float staff. The Medical Assistant will also perform general office duties (keyboarding, filing, telephone, computer and office equipment) as required. This position may also be required to provide medical coverage as needed for NHBP events.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Prepares patient for exam and treatment by taking and recording vital signs, chief complaint, and other necessary measurements. Obtains and reviews medical, surgical and social history, including medications and allergies.
- Performs procedures (in office labs: venipuncture, urinalysis, pregnancy testing, strep screens; EKG’s, TB testing,) and reports results to providers.
- Performs CLIA testing and maintains quality control logs.
- Prepares and administers medications as directed by the provider.
- Accurately documents all patient information in the medical record according to current guidelines.
- Communicates information regarding testing, procedures and follow up care to patient in a clear, concise and professional manner.
- Responsible for prioritization of patient flow through clinical process.
- Triages patient phone calls, assessing condition and brainstorming to create a plan of action that is appropriate for the situation.
- Responsible to perform duties of MRO Assistant (Donor contract, Medication verification, employer notification – if position location requires).
- Maintains occupational health immunization program files and notifies employer of staff participation – if position location requires).
- Performs occupational health in office lab procedures (BAT testing, Drug screen collection etc., if position locations require.)
- Maintains a clean, functional environment including cleaning and disinfection of equipment, exam rooms and storage areas. Disinfects equipment and instruments using appropriate solutions following sterilization procedures. Follows manufacturer's recommendations and OSHA guidelines in handling of hazardous substances. Performs basic maintenance of equipment and coordinates needed maintenance for prompt repairs.
- Orders supplies and stocks patient care areas. Monitors inventory including medication/injectables (e.g. expired medications/equipment and recalls).
- Responsible for administering, balancing and ordering immunizations as well as inputting required information into MCIR. In addition, maintains the log for freezer and refrigeration units that contain lab tests and vaccinations.
- Develops and maintains effective communication mechanism with all external and internal customers. Exemplifies service orientation and the team concept in all contacts.
- Provides clerical support with patient/client notifications and documentation to include but not limited to complete medical records including labs, authorizations, X-Rays, hospital records and any previous care pertaining to each patient visit. Provides complete and accurate information necessary for billing related to the patient encounter in a timely fashion.
- Maintains a high level of confidentiality and ensures patient’s rights in accordance with proper procedures and in compliance with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act).
- Participates in case conference.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
An applicant’s education, training and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the ability to successfully perform each of the essential functions. The requirements listed below are generally representative of the education, experience, and skills and/or ability required to enable one to successfully perform the essential functions associated with his position:
- High School diploma or GED equivalent
- Requires completion of a medical assistant certificate or diploma program from an accredited institution.
- Must be Certified/Registered as a Medical Assistant or able to be Certified/Registered within 6 months of hire.
- Minimum one (1) year medical assisting experience or health office experience.
- BLS certification upon hire or as soon as training is provided.
- MRO Assistant certification within 6 months of hire (if position location requires).
- BAT Technician certification within 6 months of hire (if position location requires).
- Must maintain a valid driver’s license with good driving record; GSA certifiable and must be able to travel.
- Ability to become CPR/First Aid certified.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Willingness to develop a comprehensive understanding of Trauma Informed Care and apply to daily functions.
- Ability to understand, gain knowledge and appreciate the differences with the Native American culture and customs.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Experience with electronic medical records and appointment scheduling/billing system.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Strong organization and data management skills; ability to maintain both physical and electronic files.
- Ability to maintain good working relationships with tribal members, co-workers, community resources and the general public.

PREFERRED
- Completion of a Medical Assistant degree program from an accredited institution; or
- Completion of a Practical Nursing certificate program and licensed as an LPN.
- Experience working with Tribal government or Native American institutions.
