The Assistant Teacher in the Early Childhood Classrooms at Gordon School plays a vital role in providing a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment for children. Working closely with the Lead Teacher and under the supervision of the Early Childhood Director, the Assistant Teacher assists in the daily activities and routines of the classroom.
Classroom Support
- Assist the Lead Teacher in implementing developmentally appropriate curriculum and activities including integrating Jewish Values, Jewish Wisdom, and Jewish Holidays into the day.
- Create a welcoming and stimulating classroom environment that encourages exploration, inquiry and learning.
- Help maintain a clean and organized classroom.
Playground Time:
- Supervise outdoor playtime, facilitating safe and age-appropriate activities.
- Ensure all playground items are safe each time you use the space.
- Place items away with the appropriate help of children.
Child Supervision:
- Ensure the well-being and safety of all children in the classroom.
- Promote positive behavior and resolve conflicts using appropriate strategies.
- Attend to children's individual needs.
- Respect children as unique individuals that have thoughts and ideas,
- Do not speak of, about another child above his eye level. Always have conversations at eye level.
- Use protocol for incident/accident reports:
- Communicate about ALL incident/accident reports to Lead Teacher and Early Childhood Director
- Complete and incident/Accident report as per form
- Make sure parents are notified of incident/Accident report
Collaboration:
- Work collaboratively with the Lead Teacher in planning and executing daily lessons.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas for experience and curriculum enhancement.
- Participate in school-wide events to build community and teamwork.
- Participate in monthly school-wide meetings and monthly ECC team meetings.
- Participate in fundraising efforts to promote among parents.
Skill Development:
- Assist in assessing and documenting children's developmental progress and milestones.
- Support children in the development of social, emotional, cognitive, and physical skills.
Observations and Interactions:
- Observe children's behavior, interests, and needs, and report observations to the Lead Teacher.
- Foster positive and meaningful interactions with children, promoting language and social development.
Communication:
- Maintain open and effective communication with parents, families and colleagues.
- Report any concerns or incidents to the Lead Teacher and create documentation for the Director.
- Use all required safety measures and protocols as per emergency procedures.
- Use a walkie talkie assigned to the class.
Qualifications:
- DCF 45 hours (or willingness to obtain within the first year of employment).
- Florida Staff Credential (or willingness to obtain).
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Patience, compassion, and a genuine love for working with children.
- Ability to follow directions and work effectively as part of a team.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to sit, stand, bend, and move around the classroom and playground.
This job description outlines the general nature and level of work expected from an Assistant Teacher at Gordon School. The Assistant Teacher will report directly to the Early Childhood Director and work collaboratively with the school's educational team to provide high-quality early childhood education and care.
Schedule
This position is a full-time position. Most of the hours required to work are from 7:30am to 4:00pm, Monday through Thursday and 7:30am-3:15pm on Friday, based on a school calendar year. This position requires flexibility to stay late and arrive early or work weekends during for special events.
