Position Overview & Primary Responsibilities:
As Fleet Mechanic, you will be responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of heavy equipment, such as backhoes, trackhoes, semi-trucks, pick-up trucks, and other construction tools and machinery. Your expertise and attention to detail will contribute to the safe, timely, and efficient operation of our diverse equipment fleet and crew efficiency. A candidate with a CDL is strongly preferred.
This role requires a strategic thinker and problem solver with strong self-accountability and independence, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to take initiative and optimize processes to meet company goals.
- Scheduled, preventative, on-road or emergency fleet inspections, maintenance, service calls and repairs
- Use fleet management software to track and monitor vehicle work orders and performance
- Manage budgets, obtain quotes, handle purchasing, and identify cost-saving opportunities
- Support Management with the day-to-day operations of the yard, ensuring adherence to safety protocols, organization of equipment, and cleanliness of the facility

- Fleet Management:
- Develop and execute comprehensive fleet inspections, preventive maintenance, and start to finish repairs to ensure company vehicles and equipment are readily available and operate cost-effectively on a regular schedule.
- Coordinate with third-party mechanics, adhering to safety standards and DOT regulations.
- Utilize fleet management software Fleetio to optimize and monitor vehicle performance.
- Perform on-road emergency service calls.
- Operate equipment as needed to diagnose issues and conduct post-repair test runs.
- Conduct in-house repairs and maintenance on a regular schedule at job sites, collaborating with Area Managers to minimize disruptions to field production.
- Communicate machine conditions to management.
- Safety Compliance:
- Adhere to safety guidelines and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and other team members when working/on-site.
- Comply with all relevant regulations and promote a culture of safety.
- Vendor Sourcing and Management:
- Source and coordinate with vendors for equipment maintenance and repair.
- Facilitate the delivery of vehicles and equipment to third-party mechanics.
- Monitor service quality and maintain good working relationships with vendors.
- Communicate updates and schedules to management.
- Cost Management:
- Develop and manage budgets for fleet and maintenance operations, striving to optimize costs while maintaining service quality.
- Analyze cost data, obtain quotes, identify cost-saving opportunities, and implement cost-reduction initiatives.
- Maintain Accurate Records:
- Maintaining accurate records and generating reports related to fleet needs, maintenance, and safety. Examples include but are not limited to fleet maintenance scheduling, tracking, and reporting for things like delivery to appointments and in-house repair work; updating Fleetio with daily truck and equipment statuses; keeping a schedule with maintenance and repairs; organize fleet history in SharePoint, etc.
- Support and provide information to Area Managers and Office Management to allow Management to effectively reassign drivers and maintain work schedules.
- Provide timely and accurate information to the supervisor as required.
- Coordinate with Team Members:
- Collaborate with supervisors, operators, and other mechanics to prioritize repair tasks, share knowledge, and ensure smooth equipment operations.
- Maintain a Clean and Organized Work Area:
- Keep the workshop, tools, and equipment clean, organized, and in good working condition.
- Adhere to proper tool and equipment handling practices.
- Yard Operations Assistance:
- Help the Yard Manager oversee day-to-day operations of the yard, ensuring adherence to safety protocols, organization of equipment, and cleanliness of the facility.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of 5 years experience, to fulfill this position successfully one must be able to work with minimal supervision/assistance
- Completion of a recognized diesel mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic program is preferred, e.g. 45 week diesel tech program; associate’s degree in diesel mechanics etc.
- Proven experience as a diesel mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic
- Owning and maintaining the necessary tools to perform the work is a plus
- Accurately order needed parts from vendors when necessary
- Advanced knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and other mechanical components
- Proficiency in diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical issues using diagnostic tools and equipment
- Fabrication and welding skills preferred
- Ability to operate the machinery being worked on in the field or at the shop
- Familiarity with safety regulations and procedures related to heavy equipment operation and maintenance
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Effective communication skills to interact with team members and convey technical information
- Valid driver's license, CDL preferred, clean driving record, and pass a background check
- Ability to perform heavy lifting/pushing/pulling of material weighing 50 pounds
- Ability to squat, crawl, and work in confined spaces
