A Retail Pharmacy Technician supports pharmacists in a retail pharmacy environment by assisting with the preparation and dispensing of medications, providing excellent customer service, and performing various administrative and inventory management tasks. This role ensures the efficient operation of the pharmacy and contributes to the overall health and wellness of the community.
Key Responsibilities
1. **Medication Preparation and Dispensing**
- Accurately prepare and dispense prescription medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
- Measure, count, and label medications following pharmacy standards and protocols.
- Ensure proper storage and handling of medications.
2. **Customer Service**
- Greet and assist customers in a friendly and professional manner.
- Answer customer inquiries regarding medications, health products, and pharmacy services.
- Provide information on prescription status and insurance coverage.
- Handle customer complaints and refer complex issues to the pharmacist.
3. **Administrative Tasks**
- Enter and update patient information in the pharmacy management system.
- Process prescription orders, including electronic, phone, and faxed prescriptions.
- Manage insurance claims, resolve billing issues, and process payments.
- Maintain accurate and complete records of all pharmacy transactions.
4. **Inventory Management**
- Monitor inventory levels of medications and pharmacy supplies.
- Order and restock inventory to ensure the pharmacy is adequately stocked.
- Check for expired medications and remove them from the inventory.
- Conduct regular inventory audits and report discrepancies to the pharmacist.
5. **Compliance and Safety**
- Adhere to all federal, state, and local pharmacy regulations and guidelines.
- Follow pharmacy protocols to ensure patient safety and medication accuracy.
- Participate in continuous education and training programs to stay current with pharmacy practices and laws.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
6. **Collaboration and Teamwork**
- Work closely with pharmacists, other pharmacy technicians, and healthcare providers to deliver optimal patient care.
- Communicate effectively with team members to ensure smooth pharmacy operations.
- Assist in training and mentoring new pharmacy technicians.
Qualifications:
- **Education and Certification**
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of a pharmacy technician training program preferred.
- Certification as a Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) is preferred or required by some states.
- Valid pharmacy technician license as required by state regulations.
- Skills and Abilities
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Proficient in using pharmacy management software and other computer applications.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and pharmacology.

- Previous experience working in a retail pharmacy setting is preferred but not required.
- Familiarity with insurance billing and pharmacy operations is a plus.
Work Environment
- The position is typically based in a retail pharmacy within a grocery store, drugstore, or other retail establishment.
- May require evening, weekend, and holiday work hours.
