Under (close) supervision of the PI, this position should provide high-level technical support and perform experiments and analyses to investigate nutrient status and metabolomic profiles of human bodily fluids, in particular of mothers and/or infants. The SRA will participate in coordinating analysis according to established procedures with potential method development in close collaboration with the PI, prepare human samples (e.g. blood, plasma, serum, milk, etc) for (micro)nutrient and targeted metabolomics analyses. Further, the SRA will perform (raw) data analysis and evaluating quality controls, preparing data sets from raw data, assist in lab management (e.g., waste management and sample organization), and support report writing, and grant application preparation as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related area, or equivalent experience/training.

Experience in basic laboratory work, e.g. correct use of pipettes, scales, aliquoting, chemical and biological waste management, etc.

Experience in the use of quantitative analytical chemistry and internal standard methodologies.

Experience using HPLC and LC-MS, knowledge of ICP-MS acquisitions and sample presentation.

Experience in Analyst, Multiquant, and Syngistix software.

Experience in quantitative analytical data quality assessment.

Experience in working in a high-volume sample processing environment.

Experience in Microsoft office (e.g., excel, word, power point).
Preferred Qualifications

Experience in using Biocrates Targeted Metabolomics kit for sample analysis and its software (webIDQ).

Must be an organized, self-motivated, results-oriented and pragmatic individual.

Skills in routine LC-MS maintenance.

Skills in near infrared-spectroscopy.

Background on infant nutrition and infant metabolism is preferred.

Department Overview
The Institute of Global Nutrition (IGN) is a Program of the UC Davis Department of Nutrition. IGN coordinates research and training activities concerning human nutrition problems of low-income countries, and of ethnic minorities and disadvantaged groups in the United States. The position is physically located at the USDA, ARS Western Human Nutrition Research Center (WHNRC); its mission is to improve dietary recommendations by understanding variability in people’s response to diets, nutrition and other food constituents. Our laboratory (Allen lab) is renowned globally for our state-of-the-art analytical capabilities for human milk nutrient profiling, including maternal and infant status assessment. Since the physical work location is a federal government facility, additional federal requirements for background checks may be required for e.g., building access.

The laboratory environment has a constant noise level between ~60-75db due to laboratory equipment, which must be tolerated.

All laboratory safety requirements must be met, all mandatory training (e.g., safety, IT) must be current or completed, proof must be provided.

Overtime is usually not required, but the applicant must be aware that evening work may occur on occasions to avoid loss of sample.
