The Taos News, an independently owned newspaper ranked as the best small weekly in the U.S. by the National Newspaper Association, is looking to add an ambitious and talented reporter to its newsroom staff.
The candidate hired for this position will have the opportunity to report in one of the most beautiful and unique areas of Northern New Mexico, home to a generational Spanish population and two Native American pueblos. Outdoor recreation opportunities abound here, with world-renowned ski resorts and some of the best hiking, camping and biking areas in the country minutes from our office.
While this is an entry level position, applicants should be comfortable juggling multiple assignments each week, responding quickly to breaking news and working well both independently and alongside a team of skilled journalists and editors. We are looking for candidates who can turn around day-one stories quickly and accurately, as well as write deep-dive enterprise pieces that explore issues in greater depth. The Taos News is seeking a reporter who can write snappy headlines and leads, with a strong grasp of Associated Press style guidelines. While we employ a staff photographer, applicants for this role should also know their way around a camera and photo editing software.
Our reporters get to experience Northern New Mexico as few people do: In the span of a day, you might raft down the Rio Grande to report on spring runoff in the morning and cover an art festival at night.
This is a fantastic opportunity to play an important role in continuing our newspaper’s legacy of outstanding community journalism and hone your journalistic skills in a newsroom known for excellence.
Job requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree and at least one year experience reporting for a weekly or daily newspaper
- Excellent writing and interviewing skills
- Basic knowledge of photojournalism, including Adobe Photoshop
- Familiarity with Associated Press style guidelines
- Ability to complete at least 5 assignments per week, including news briefs and longer-form articles
- Impeccable journalistic ethics
The Taos News offers competitive wages. After a 90-day probationary period, we also offer employees a discounted spa membership, non-matching 401K, subsidized health, dental and vision insurance coverage and a work environment where you will be given the support and encouragement to take your work and career to the next level.
We are an equal opportunity employer. Local candidates or those already familiar with Northern New Mexico are strongly encouraged to apply for this position.
