Overview
Berend Bros. is an 85 year-old company with five locations specializing in feed, fertilizer, seed, pet, and farm & ranch products. The company also has two feed mills and two fertilizer blending facilities. We are dedicated to providing quality products with superior knowledge and service.
The Purchasing Manager is responsible for developing and executing purchasing strategies, optimizing pricing, managing inventory, and coordinating purchase logistics. This is a key role within our organization, requiring strong organizational and analytical skills. The existing Manager is retiring after a long tenure with the Company and will assist with the transition in the role.
Key Responsibilities
· Collaborate with all locations and company leadership to identify and develop needs and requirements for commercial and retail inventories.
· Consolidate purchase requests and balance orders and inventory between locations to ensure optimal stock levels are maintained.
· Negotiate prices and contracts with suppliers, and monitor status of all purchase contracts.
· Monitor prices of key commodities, and research competitor pricing of key products.
· Optimize retail/customer pricing to maximize profits, and communicate price changes internally.
· Anticipate seasonal inventory requirements and adjust purchase plans and schedules accordingly.
· Develop customer price quotations for large orders.
· Schedule transportation to ensure timely and cost-effective fulfillment of orders.
· Research and evaluate vendors to compare pricing and service, and identify alternative products and vendors.
· Continuously seek to improve processes by increasing efficiency and/or reducing costs.
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s Degree in supply chain management, business administration, or a related field.
· 5+ years purchasing experience.
· Detail-oriented with strong organization, communication and team buildings skills.
· Willing and able to develop creative ideas to solve problems.
· Proficient in logistics and inventory control.
· Strong analytical skills: able to create, track and analyze data, develop recommendations and conclusions, and take actions on next steps.
· Proficiency with personal computers, including Microsoft office suite (particularly Excel), email communications, and cloud storage.
· Agricultural background or knowledge of agricultural and/or animal-related products preferred.
