- Must be able to work with any and all breeds
- DVM from accredited School of Veterinary Medicine.
- A valid license to practice veterinary medicine issued by the Texas Veterinary Medical Board.
- Five years of directly related experience as a veterinarian is required.
- Experience in shelter medicine preferred.
- Working knowledge of current veterinary standards and practices.
- Understanding of animal behavior and use of positive reinforcement techniques to interact with animals.
- Chameleon database knowledge is desired.
- Effective time management and communication.
- Ability to handle a fast-paced, stressful shelter environment with tact and diplomacy.
- Strong surgical skills
- Customer service experience with strong interpersonal skills.
- Physically able to lift/carry up to 100 pounds
- Knowledge of contagious diseases and isolation protocol
- Must be self-motivated and willing to work as directed
- MUST be a Team player, able to work in a fast-pace environment and multi-task
- Compassion for animals, comfortable working in the shelter environment and willing to accommodate animals in the work place
- Works with a positive attitude focusing on MCAS mission & goals.
- Performs various surgical procedures and treatment.
- Ability to complete at least 25-30 spay/neuter surgeries each day in a timely manner.
- Maintains accurate records on animals, pharmaceuticals, equipment and supplies.
- Examines animals in clinic during clinic hours; provides consultations and provides appropriate medications & care.
- Ability to comfortably perform in public facing environment.
- A team player that is flexible and willing to do what is needed to accomplish the mission & goals.
- Examines animals in Shelter and diagnoses illness, injuries, health conditions and behavior issues.
- Provide guidance and instructions to medical & shelter staff.
- Have the ability, knowledge and desire to perform other surgeries including but not limited to amputations, mass removal, soft tissue damage and eye surgeries.
- Immediately responds to the needs of animals in MCAS care that are injured or seriously ill. Euthanize animal in accordance with state laws and MCAS policy.
- Active in animal cruelty and neglect investigations by performing detailed medical evaluations, treatment, necropsies and expert testimony in court.
- Maintain appropriate licensing and continuing education course requirements.
- Contribute to the organization protocols, policies and procedures.

After receiving a conditional offer of employment, applicant must pass a drug screen (1/2 cost = $20.00, responsibility of applicant) and may need a physical agility test (1/2 cost = $22.50, responsibility of applicant) before becoming an employee of Montgomery County.
