POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Safety Specialist is responsible for ensuring the health and safety of the workers, the environment, and the equipment of the facility. This position works closely with the operations, maintenance, and quality team to provide proper training and guidance on safety policies, procedures, and programs. This position must have knowledge of hazards and risks associated with this type of operation, as well as the regulations and standards that apply to it.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Conduct regular inspections and audits of the plant to identify and eliminate any potential hazards or violations.
· Maintain an inquisitive nature while promoting teamwork.
· Develop, implement, and monitor safety policies, procedures, and programs in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other relevant agencies.
· Provide training and guidance to the workers on safety topics, such as personal protective equipment (PPE), emergency response, fire prevention, and hazard communication.
· Assist the Terminal Manager with ensuring the Houston facility remains in compliance with all regulatory agencies.
· Maintain accurate and updated records of all safety activities, such as inspections, audits, training, and reports.
· Promotes terminal cleanliness.
· Investigate and report any accidents, incidents, or near misses that occur at the plant, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
· Collaborate with the Terminal Manager to drive initiatives with continuous improvement objectives: focused waste minimization, productivity/efficiency, 5S and service improvements
· Ensure processing equipment is in good working condition and complies with safety standards.
· Manage the storage, handling, and disposal of chemical waste and by-products.
· Stay updated on the latest developments and best practices in the safety field.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
· A bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as occupational health and safety, is preferred.
· 3-5 years of experience with safety management are essential.
· You’ll need strong leadership skills to oversee the health and safety of the team.
· Being aware of your surroundings and adapting to changing situations is crucial.
· Familiarity with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations is required.
· You’ll encounter various challenges, so effective problem-solving skills are valuable.
· Excellent communication skills are necessary for coordinating with teams and ensuring smooth operations.
· Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software.
· Having a valid driver’s license is beneficial.
· Managing schedules, compliance, and maintenance requires good organizational abilities.
