Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in education, child development, psychology or related discipline.
Basic knowledge of child development is required.
Minimum of two years work experience with special needs children (i.e. school, camp, counselor, child care work, college practicum experiences, etc).
Must have the ability to relate positively and sensitively to Lourie Center School (LCS) Children and interact positively with other LCS team members.
CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification preferred. Must be able to physically manage children in CPI’s Children’s Control Position and Team Control Position.
Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Safety Officer with oversight by the Leadership Team, the Behavior Technician maintains the safety of the school environment by proactively intervening in situations that could escalate into crises and supporting all students, staff members, and classrooms.
1. Consistently monitors all classrooms as well as the strategy rooms, anticipating and identifying situations which may be escalating for the purpose of early intervention.
2. Able to skillfully use a wide variety of verbal and nonverbal de-escalation techniques while maintaining a patient and respectful attitude toward students
3. Demonstrates ability to relate to children at their level of understanding
4. Takes the lead and assists with any crisis situation--performing physical restraints or taking a student to the seclusion room
5. Interacts regularly with classroom staff and social workers and leadership team involved in crises
6. Able to maintain professionalism with all staff and students in challenging situations, supporting leadership team regarding any changes in policy.
7. Assists in classrooms, as necessary, when other staff members are absent.
8. Processes Behavioral Intervention Data Sheets by proofreading forms, ensuring accuracy of documentation, obtaining appropriate signatures, and making copies to send home to parent/guardian.
9. Debriefs with involved staff members and documents the debriefing on Behavioral Intervention Data Sheets.
10. Provides feedback and guidance to staff members regarding positive reinforcement, behavior management, and crisis intervention.
11. Collects and analyzes behavioral data to construct behavior plans for each individual student
12. Communicates with transportation staff regarding reports of student behavior on the bus, relays reports to each classroom, and evaluates safety plans for students presenting challenging behavior on the bus
13. Reviews digitally recorded footage of crisis as needed for training, troubleshooting, and staff development
14. Participates in the school’s interdisciplinary team meetings, workshops, and other selected Lourie Center staff meetings.
15. Continues professional education in special education or a related discipline by attending internal or external workshops, conferences, and/or coursework.
16. Performs other duties as assigned by the teacher or Leadership Team.
