Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Licensed Pharmacist and according to law, policy, and standard procedures dispenses and delivers medications and pharmaceutical supplies. Compounds sterile, non-sterile and hazardous products as required. Fills orders, picks and delivers restocks for automated dispensing machines (ADMs); provides basic trouble shooting of ADMs and general pharmacy equipment and applications; pre-packs both hazardous and non-hazardous medications; enters charges and credits into computer, makes rounds to deliver and return medications and IVs. Pharmacy Technician III must meet all requirements listed for Pharmacy Technician II and be able to work independently with minimal supervision with assignments, projects, initiatives, or jobs for which they are assigned. Additional requirements include all items listed for Pharmacy Technician II as well as the following: national pharmacy technician licensure; precepting and mentoring new employees as well as educating current employees on new policies, procedures, process, equipment or other departmental needs; implementing and completing quality or safety improvements or cost saving processes on an annual basis; presenting evidence of substantial contribution to patient safety, quality control or cost saving initiatives. The Lead Pharmacy Technician will be primarily responsible for: supervising and assisting pharmacy technicians with their roles in the pharmacy; answering any questions pharmacy technicians may have and assisting or performing more specialized requests; scheduling pharmacy technicians and finding replacements for technicians due to illness or vacations and ensuring shift changes run smoothly; attending and conducting meetings as deemed necessary; sharing updates with staff; completing continued education on new procedures and technology; training pharmacy technicians ad interns, providing feedback and conducting performance feedback; contributing to policy changes, goal setting or making recommendations for improvements; maintaining/organizing pharmacy inventory; resolving billing issues; completing projects assigned from pharmacy management; monitoring and implementing quality control standards and other regulations; communicating with other relevant departments, healthcare professionals, services and serving on committees when deemed appropriate.
Responsibilities
Expertise Actively learns and demonstrates expertise in the pharmacy technician role by staying abreast of departmental practices and policies, but consistently performing within the pharmacy practice act, and by displaying a consistent understanding of all required duties and the timeline for their completion. Demonstrates technical ability in managing the various pharmacy systems including the automatic dispensing machines, the pharmacy information systems, the controlled substance safe and inventory, and the medications pre-packager. Maintains sterile compounding and hazardous drug competency. Compounds sterile IV preparations per USP and guidelines. Follows all policies and procedures for sterile compounding. Serves as the pharmacy team leader and project manager for the ADMs in conjunction with pharmacy management. Responsible for the overall troubleshooting, maintenance and optimization of the ADMs or contacting appropriate support staff if needed. Responsible for the initial configuration of new or repurposed equipment. Periodically (at least quarterly) evaluates ADM stock for appropriate vend/refill ratios and inventory that has not been dispensed and adjusts stock to minimize expired medications. Rotates stock at risk of expiring to areas of greater utilization. Actively reviews reports, at least once weekly, of drugs that are short-dated, short supplied or approaching expiration dates and move them to an area of greater use/need. Actively reviews, at least once weekly, all medications pended but not loaded and address appropriately in a timely manner. Responsible for the loading and unloading of medication changes in the event of formulary changes, drug shortages, etc. Responsible for outdating all controlled substances in all ADMs and CII safe. Actively addresses all repeated stock out issues and resolves with appropriate parties. Actively monitors discrepancies and acts as liaison between different parties to resolve discrepancies. Assists the nursing staff with coordinating medication therapy to meet individual needs. Contributes to the efficient availability of the right medication at the right time for our patients. Demonstrates organizational skills and plans ahead. Exhibits effective problem-solving skills in dealing with customer needs. Minimizes error in dose calculations, labeling, and dispensing. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Heavy Work: Lift 25 pounds manually frequently, >25 pounds lift with assistance and push 150 pounds on wheels. 4+ years’ experience. Exceptions can be made at the discretion of management.
