Summary Provides general nursing care to residents in a residential treatment facility for children by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
* Explains procedures and treatments to patient to gain cooperation, understanding, and allay
apprehension.
* Prepares equipment and aids Physician during treatment and examination of patient.
* Maintains awareness of comfort and safety needs of patient.
* Observes patient, records significant conditions and reactions, and notifies supervisor or
Physician of patient's condition
and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents.
* Takes temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs to detect deviations from normal
and assess condition of patient.
* Documents nursing history and physical assessment for assigned patients.
* Prepares examination room
* Participates in department or unit quality improvement activities.
* Completes medical evaluation, records youth's medical history and vital signs, and sets up
medical chart.
* Monitors health status of residents
* Completes disease prevention, risk reduction, and reproductive health education.
* Arranges various medical appointments (e.g. specialists, dentist, eye, etc.).
* Ensures all physicals/check-ups are completed within standard time requirements.
* Arranges for and monitors special dietary needs for medical conditions.
* Reviews medication requirements with resident, providing education to the resident about the
benefits and side effects of taking prescribed medications.
* Coordinates scheduling and services delivered by the Medical Doctors and Psychiatrist.
* Coordinates necessary lab work and places pharmaceutical orders as needed.
* Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient's clinical
problems and health care needs.
* Discusses case with physician and other health professionals to prepare comprehensive patient
care plan.
* Refers patients to specialized health resources for treatment.
* Makes medication passes
* Monitors medication compliance with MCCA standards.
* Consults with physician and pharmacy to confirm prescribed medications.
* Monitors lab levels including consultation with physicians and clinical staff.
* Monitors medication side-effects.
* Coordinates and monitors the delivery and transfer of medications.
* Reviews MARs on a regular basis for accuracy and errors.
* Is available and provides assistance (via phone) to staff during off hours regarding medication
and health issues.
* Assists youth in discharge and aftercare planning.
* Educates youth regarding medical care and continued medication management.
* Submits discharge summary.
* Presents training classes on medication administration for direct care staff, preparing them for
certification.
* Provides refresher courses to direct care staff for re-certification.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises one employee in the Nursing Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university preferred; and two years related experience.
Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
