JOB SUMMARY
The Public Works Maintenance Worker position may be assigned to one of these three departments: Stormwater, Street or Water. This position is responsible for assisting in the repair and maintenance of the stormwater management system, city streets and rights-of-way and/or assist in the construction, repair, and maintenance of the water distribution systems for the City of Pooler.
MAJOR DUTIES
Assists in the routine maintenance of city water ways, including canals and retention ponds.
Assists in the repair of the City's stormwater system(s).
Removes debris from waterways.
Performs pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections; maintains vehicles and equipment.
Assists with land clearing operations for City of Pooler projects.
Responds to after-hour storm event emergencies and citizen complaints.
Assists with street excavation and repair duties.
Removes debris from streets.
Maintains city right-of-way, including curbs, gutters, and driveways; mows right-of-way; cuts and removes trees and limbs; edges sidewalks; blows leaves from sidewalks.
Transports equipment and materials to work sites.
Places cones, barriers, barricades, and safety barrels at work sites.
Responds to service calls regarding water quality, pressure, and leaks. Inspects water meters and backflow devises for proper operations, repairing or replacing water meters when necessary.
Documents functions and maintains log of city water wells and valve stations; collects water samples.
Assists in locating city-owned utilities.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of stormwater management system construction and maintenance principles and or knowledge of the materials and methods used in the construction, maintenance and repair of water lines.
Knowledge of city and departmental policies and procedures.
Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a variety of equipment.
Skill in the use of a variety of maintenance equipment.
Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
Skill in oral and written communication.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
