Job Description
The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting a Staff Research Associate 1 - Animal Care Staff Lead for the Office of Animal Resources. ***This position does not provide layoff rights and is contingent upon funding. *** This position will report to the Staff Research Associate 4 and will be responsible for assisting the lead coordinator for the centralized vivarium spaces and equipment and for providing animal care and technical services for a variety of important faculty programs in life sciences research and teaching. As a Staff Research Associate 1, this position also has direct responsibility for providing routine and customized animal husbandry, including housing, food, water, and environmental enrichment, to select rooms daily.
This position also helps to monitor inventory volumes of supplies and works with other staff members for product selection and ordering to keep pace with resource needs. The Staff Research Associate 1 - Animal Care Staff Lead will assist with the program of sanitation for equipment and vivarium use areas as well as quality assurance of spaces and procedures is also expected. Technical assistance for veterinarians and resource users, including veterinary supportive care and patient monitoring and laboratory rodent breeding management, harvesting and preparing tissues, and collaborate with the veterinary and research staff in providing veterinary technical assistance is provided by this individual as part of a team of specialists serving a broad variety of investigative programs and other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
A valid Class “C” Nevada driver’s license or higher operator’s license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in a field involving animals and biology are encouraged to apply.

Candidates with a certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) are encouraged to apply
Schedule
The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs.
This position is considered to provide essential services for the campus and thus is expected to work the normal shifts even when the campus is closed. Some work on weekends and holidays is required for animal health and husbandry support. Staff are expected to respond to emergency calls during scheduled and nonscheduled work hours to assist with local or State emergency requiring laboratory support.
Compensation Grade
Grade 29
In classified service, salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment, the candidate’s qualifications, internal equity and budgets. A request to accelerate salary must be approved by Human Resources and abide by the Nevada Administrative Code.
