LOCOMOTIVE DIESEL MECHANIC
Job Description
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Performs the duties of locomotive mechanic involved in inspecting, repairing, fabricating, and maintaining historic diesel/electric ALCO locomotives and train cars to meet and exceed FRA regulations and CVSR expectations for positive, safe, and reliable customer experience while maintaining a clean and respectable fleet appearance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Inspect equipment components for compliance with FRA, Association of American Railroads (AAR), APTA (American Public Transportation Association) and CVSR standards.
- Performs scheduled and emergency maintenance on all company locomotives.
- Diagnoses, repairs, or replaces locomotive and diesel engine components including but not limited to wheels or trucks, traction motors, springs, couplers, draft gear assembly, gear cases, cylinder heads, air compressors, and turbo chargers, etc.
- Performs periodic and annual inspections and understands FRA regulations pertaining to inspections
- Operate light and heavy cranes, forklifts, car moving equipment, and other various vehicles
- Operate electrical and gas welding equipment to join a variety of metals and alloys; operate acetylene torches for cutting and/or shaping metal parts such as aluminum, cast iron, steel.
- Maintain written and computer records for maintenance and repairs as required.
- Prepare inspection, maintenance, and work reports, and record details on prescribed forms and computer records in accordance with established procedures.
- Operate locomotive on shop tracks
- Test locomotives on shop track after repair
- Give direction and share knowledge to part time, seasonal, and fulltime mechanical staff and volunteers.
- Ensure the safe, reliable, and enjoyable working conditions of the CVSR volunteer staff.
- Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). Comply with the guidelines set forth by the FRA on Personal Blue Signal Protection of Workers.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid state-issued driver’s license
- High School diploma or equivalent GED
- Must be 18 years of age
- Must meet all medical fitness for duty requirements for the position
- Using measuring devices and understanding visual displays
- Frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. and occasionally up to 75 lbs. with or without assistance.
- Displays good hand-eye coordination
- Computer Skills
- Able to work outdoors in extreme all-weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).
- Able to perform work on uneven surfaces, frequently climb ladders and on/off equipment, and work from various heights including making repairs on top of locomotives and railcars.
- Able to work in conditions that include loud noise and fumes, work on and around heavy and moving machinery, bend, walk, stand and sit for extended periods of time and use hand tools.
- Follow safety policies and procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment required for the job in a safe manner.
- Work a 40-hour work week, with flexible hours and overtime as needed.
- Demonstrate good teamwork skills and maintain positive interactions with others
- Displays good verbal, reading comprehension and writing skills
- Dedicated to getting the job done while meeting established standards of quality, safety and client satisfaction
- 2-5 years of experience as locomotive, diesel, or Technical Certifications
- Mechanical aptitude
- Experience troubleshooting hydraulic and electronic systems (preferred)
- Welding skills (preferred)
