PURPOSE:
The non-procedure room Medical Assistant (MA) assists the physician in patient care and handling basic clinical tasks in the office, ensuring that patient flow runs smoothly and efficiently. The procedure room Medical Assistant (MA) prepares the patient and assists the physician to ensure that every procedure being performed is well documented and performed with accuracy.
ACCOUNTABILITIES AND JOB ACTIVITIES:
Responsible for Appointment Verifications
Review schedule for the day
Remind patients of upcoming appointments
Confirm anticoagulation cases
Verify sedation cases
Responsible for Seating all Patients in Exam Rooms
Confirm patient name and date of birth, past medical history
Provide patient chart to the physician
Mark the room appropriately (via flags & #s)
Perform urine drug screens on necessary patients
Responsible for Carrying out Physician Orders
Monitor each patient chart after each visit
Ensure that the physician’s orders are carried out in a timely manner
Track all orders being carried out
Enter imaging orders
Enter procedure orders
Enter physical therapy orders
Arrange referrals and discuss with Lead Medical Assistant as needed
Responsible for Meeting with New patients
Seat patients in exam room
Review all intake paperwork with the patient
Explain office policies
Record all of the patient information in EMR
Responsible for Scanning Documents
Responsible for Patient Flow
Frequent review of the schedule
Direct the physician to the appropriate rooms as needed
Maintain a timely patient flow
Morning Arrival Responsibilities
Review schedule for the day
Stock shelves with needed supplies
Draw up the necessary injectable medications as needed
Verify that all needed probes are ready and sterile as needed
Responsible for Studying Patient Records before Procedures
Verify that the patient is scheduled for the correct procedure
Study the most recent note ensuring the accuracy of the procedure that is scheduled
Verify the laterality and levels of the procedure
Verify anticoagulation status
Responsible for Preparing the Patient before the Procedure
Verify the site and laterality of the procedure to be performed with the patient
Assist in properly positioning the patient on the procedure table
Assist with applying blood pressure cuff and pulse / ox sensor as needed
Assist with preparation of the skin prior to procedure as needed
Explain and obtain procedure consent
Review the Pre-OP checklist
Verify anticoagulation status
Start IVs for sedation cases
Log all vitals before and after the procedure
Log patient pain scores
Assist in transporting patients

Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when in contact with the patient, bodily fluids or hazardous materials

Clean and sanitize any spills immediately

Sterilize probes after each use

Maintain sterilization logs and maintenance of small sterilizers

Initiate lifesaving measures, such as CPR, in emergency situations as observed

2 years of procedure/surgical room experience within the last 5 years
- Current Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) Certification
- Current Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) Certification

VISION: Requires eyesight correctable to 20/20 to operate equipment and read information from printed sources and computer screens.
OTHER: Requires frequent lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted, including assisting patients when required. Adequate physical ability to be present where needed.
Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting and sitting, with some heavy lifting, pushing and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular work shift. Requires exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
