Job Title: Assistant Director of Campus Safety
Reports to: Director of Campus Safety
Terms and Conditions: 12-Months
Salary: Salary grade 16, range: $75,752-$101,003
To collaborate with administration in providing a safe learning environment for all students and staff members. Work with Director of Campus Safety to develop a comprehensive professional development plan for safety and support personnel. Work with Director of Campus Safety to develop a comprehensive campus safety and crisis plan.
Supervise and monitor Safety and Support staff.
Work as a collaborative team member with the Director of Campus Safety, Principal, staff, parents and community resource agencies to meet all safety requirements of the Illinois Board of Education. .
Work with Director of Campus Safety to ensure that security equipment (radios, cameras, plasco, visitor management system) are in proper working order.
Work with Director of Campus Safety to maintain student discipline in the building, on the school grounds, at school events, and on buses to ensure a positive, safe learning environment. Schedule and assign staff as appropriate for daily and special events.
Provide feedback to Director of Campus Safety and help evaluate all safety and support staff on an annual basis. Work with Director of Campus Safety to provide goals for safety and support personnel.
Maintain student discipline in the building, on the school grounds, at school events, and on buses to ensure a positive, safe learning environment.
Schedule and assign staff as appropriate for daily and special events.
Work with Director of Campus Safety to provide training for all Safety and Support Staff in non-violent conflict resolution and customer service.
Communicate regularly with parents and others in the community to develop and maintain a positive school-community relationship.
Meet periodically to review building schedules and usage with the Director of Campus Safety, Director of Buildings and Grounds, Food Service Director, Athletic Director, Activities Director, Calendar coordinator and Assistant Principal of Operations or other appropriate officials.
Assist Director of Campus Safety in managing electronic payroll and time off requests.
Assist Director of Campus Safety in the monitoring of the annual Safety and Support budget.
Review and establish school policy and objectives with the administrative team to facilitate effective campus safety.
Other duties as assigned by the Director of Campus Safety.
Possess thorough knowledge and understanding of law which pertains to school security and safety.
Strong interpersonal communications skills in order to meet all of the needs of organizing and directing a complex institution.
Must be familiar with the preparation of reports as required by the State Board of Education concerning evacuation and safety.
Maintain confidentiality and appropriate records when dealing with security matters
Build positive and professional relationships with students and leverage those relationships to establish and maintain productive and safe learning environments and in common areas of the building.
Exercise dignity and respect when interacting with students at all times.
Lead efforts to de-escalate inappropriate student behaviors and assist students with maximizing their time on task in classrooms.
Demonstrate commitment to social justice and restorative justice practices.
Keep abreast of current best practices and procedures in school safety and security.
Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field preferred. High School Diploma required.
Experience working with adolescents.
Experience in or a willingness to learn the tenets of social and restorative justice practices.
Ability to maintain composure in volatile situations.
Ability to reduce the level or intensity of a difficult or dangerous situation.
Experience in crisis management, investigation of individuals/or incidents, facility security personnel protection and training.
Experience in School security and safety training preferred.
Experience with incident management systems.
Working knowledge of computer and electronic information services.
Law enforcement classes or training preferred.
Must be able to meet the physical demands of the job – walking, running quickly, standing for long periods of time, climbing stairs quickly, sitting, carrying, reaching, talking, hearing, visual sight near and far.
National Incident Management System (NIMS), CPR, CSI and AED certified.
