Position Summary:
Gerald Group, a major global commodities trader, is seeking an Investment Analyst to join its Structured Finance & Investment team, based out of Stamford, Connecticut. The role will focus on the Group’s global metals trading platform and principal investments in metals & mining, logistics & infrastructure, and other forms of real asset investments. The candidate will spearhead all analytical work output for commodity market research and investment analysis, as well as hands-on management of the Group’s investment portfolio.
This position is ideally suited for a candidate who has completed an undergraduate degree in a technical area of focus such as geology, metallurgy, engineering, or a metals and mining related field from a top tier program and has some basic experience in financial analysis and accounting functions, with 0-3 years relevant work experience. The ability to speak a second language is a plus.
Responsibilities:
Origination:
- Work with the Group’s business development, trading, and investment functions to identify and develop trading and investment theses, targets, and opportunities.
- Assist traders by engaging with existing counter parties or new parties unfamiliar to Gerald Group with the aim of generating trading, financing, and investment targets.
- Attend conferences and professional events as well as site visits to mines and regions of interest.
- Perform screening of the metals and mining industry participants in relation to the Group’s trading and investment strategy to identify potential targets.
Analysis & Deal Structuring:
- Perform financial and technical due diligence on prospective trading opportunities and investments, including financial modeling, credit analysis, technical review, gap analysis, regression analysis, risk assessment, and industry research.
- Assist in transaction structuring, including hedging strategies, structuring of security and collateral, tax optimization, legal review, financing, and risk mitigation.
- Prepare memorandums to be presented to our board and external stakeholders.
- Interface with external stakeholders such as consultants, financial institutions, and underwriters.
Portfolio Management:
- Prepare or analyze technical, operational, and financial performance reports of Gerald’s portfolio companies and investments.
- Apply technical understanding of mining projects (construction, engineering, operations), mineral processing and downstream refining to monitor and optimize projects in Gerald portfolio.
- Monitor health, safety, environmental and community compliance with the Group’s policies.
- Take on temporary embedded roles in Gerald’s portfolio companies, which may require rotational travel to mining projects in areas such as West Africa for extended periods of time.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Metallurgy, Engineering, a or a metals and mining related field from a top-tier university required.
- This is a junior role with 0-3 years of experience in relevant sectors such as finance, accounting, commodities and natural resources, or industrial sectors is preferred.
- Experience working in various commodities and geographical locations is an advantage.
- Multi-Lingual candidates that are also fluent in Chinese, French, Spanish, Arabic, or Portuguese are strongly preferred.
- Excellent analytical and financial modelling skills, with the ability to make insightful recommendations and solve problems based on critical thinking and analysis.
- Strong proficiency in MS Office applications with advanced Excel skills in modeling and financial valuation and PowerPoint presentation.
- Capability to synthesize complex technical information into succinct reports for management.
- Self-starter, able to work independently or in a team environment and take initiative.
- Excels working in a multi-cultural, multi-jurisdiction team environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the desire and ability to interact with senior management, investment partners, operators, consultants, and other external parties.
