The City of Roanoke is seeking a Library Assistant to perform clerical and customer service work in the public library system. The successful candidate will charge and discharge library materials, register patrons, assist in controlling status of materials in circulation; maintain files and records; assist the public in the use of library facilities; and locate books, magazines and other materials as requested. They will also provide general library information, examine shelves, replace incorrectly shelved books, work with staff on programs for adults and children and prepare library materials for circulation. High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one to three months related experience and/or training in a clerical environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

SUMMARY
Performs clerical work in the public library system.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

May require evening and weekend hours of work.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Ability to read and comprehend instructions. Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing?
