MOTOR VECHICLE OPERATOR The purpose and function of this position is to operate gasoline and alternate fuel, passenger cars, vans, SUV’s and light trucks to transport the principal DOE officials (excluding The Secretary and Deputy Secretary), government documents and national security materials to designated locations in the Washington Metro area. This position requires a security clearance.
MAJOR DUTIES:•Operates a passenger vehicle in transporting top staff and secretarial officers in the Department of Energy to and from specified locations. Incumbent must be prompt and professional in meeting official transport request. Provides motor transportation to important representatives of Government and business, to foreign dignitaries, and persons of similar rank having official business with the Office of the Secretary. The vehicles operated will be either a sedan, SUV, Mini Van, or a 15passenger vehicle. The vehicle operator must use alternative fuel when applicable
.• Maintains and prepares records of the day-to-day use of the car. Notifies supervisor of needs for repair, personally performing minor repairs and routine maintenance to the vehicle including changing tires during emergencies, checking brakes, sweeping and dusting interior, etc.
- As required the driver couriers unclassified, classified and highly sensitive documents addressed to senior officials at other Government agencies. The incumbent shall be required to deliver and pickup material for official passport and visa processing from official embassies in the Washington Metro area. The incumbent will be responsible for the processing of material for destruction in the Sensitive Waste Disposal Program.
- When not engaged in official activities as a driver, the incumbent will assist in other areas of the operations. Examples are assisting the dispatcher in processing telephonic request for transportation services; providing customer assistance relative to package services and classified document control; assistance in data collection activities associated with the maintenance of the fleet vehicles. These activities include but are not limited to tabulating vehicle mileage; determining vehicles to be scheduled for maintenance and ferrying vehicles to the maintenance facility.
- Operator is responsible for loading and unloading cargo into the vehicle. Cargo is arranged according to size and structure and secured duties as assigned.•Performs other related duties as assigned.
SPECIAL REQURIEMENTS: Individual must be able to obtain a “Q” Level security clearance to perform messenger duties. A safe driving record and valid state driver’s license are required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:• Skilled in oral and written communications.
Must be computer literate to enter data and maintain routine computerized reports using personal computer.
•Must possess a current valid motor vehicle permit.• Must have knowledge of the road network in the Washington metropolitan area.
- Mechanical knowledge sufficient to anticipate necessary repairs and make minor repairs or adjustments such as changing tires.
- Knowledge of regulations covering established procedures for collection, safe transport, delivery and accountability of classified information or documents.
•Knowledge of proper procedures for handling official Government mail within DOE, classified materials and interagency pickup and delivery services.
•Must be alert and exercise extreme care while driving to avoid accidents.
•Must exercise proper precautions for safeguarding classified information or documents.
- Interpersonal communication skills to deal discreetly with day-to-day personal contacts often involving sensitive, confidential and sometimes controversial matters.
