Registered Veterinary Technician

Qualifications
- Currently a Registered Veterinary Technician in Georgia, or willing to move to Georgia and take the Georgia Boards.
- At least 2 years of experience working in a veterinary practice.
- Ability to stay calm and efficient in a medical crisis.
- Approaches job duties in a mature and professional manner.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to ethics and integrity
- Experienced in the teamwork approach and works well with all levels of hospital team members.
- Possesses the ability to work efficiently, and independently to meet deadlines, goals, and objectives.
- Strong organization, time management, and attention to detail
- Understands the Scope of Practice for Registered Veterinary Technicians as outlined by the Georgia State Board of Veterinary Medicine.
- Clear understanding of all common vaccination types and protocols.
- Performs radiographs properly, and effectively.
- Place and maintain IV catheters.
- Understands the use and care of IV pumps.
- Knowledge of common disease states and symptoms.
- Properly collect & process laboratory samples for external labs. Properly perform laboratory analysis on in-house laboratory machines. Collects and performs urinalysis on in-house laboratory machines, as well as properly reads urine sediment.
- Performs skin-scrapes and reads skin/ear cytology. Prepares fungal cultures proficiently.
- Understands and performs emergency medical care protocols such as,
-Control of bleeding
-Resuscitation with oxygen
-Opening airways
-External cardiac massage
-Following veterinarian’s instructions while in an active emergency
-Attend the required state-approved continuing education each year to maintain license.
Performance Expectations
· Provide compassionate care to each patient.
· Effectively assess the physical condition of all patients; alert veterinarian when symptoms change or when concerns arise.
· Restrain and handle pets properly according to need.
· Administer SQ, IM and IV injections.
· Understand usage, dosage, and common side-effects for commonly used prescription drugs.
· Admit patients following hospital policy.
· Discharge patients based on the veterinarian’s orders, ensuring that patients are well-groomed and in stable condition.
· Induce anesthesia and intubate patients according to established veterinary medical guidelines, and doctor’s instructions.
Client Communication
· Treat clients with compassion and understanding.
· Educate clients about care, preventative measures, and common diseases.
· Address clients’ medical questions with confidence and direct to veterinarians when appropriate.
· Present estimates for procedures and discuss financial commitments with clients supporting hospital financial policies.
· Explain necessary follow-up care and homecare instructions.
· Document all client communications accurately and appropriately in the medical record.
Teaching / Training
· Willing and able to share knowledge and experience in order to evaluate staff.
· Train staff members on medical procedures and hospital policies.
· Present continuing education material to staff as requested by management.
Administrative / Clerical
· Keep legible, accurate medical records in accordance with hospital policy.
· Prepare accurate estimates for all common procedures.
Other Engaging Activities
- Engaging and communicating with clients and staff.
- Getting and maintaining patient information and records.
- Perform basic care for patients that do not require a veterinarian.
- Assist the doctor with patient treatments, procedures, and activities.
- Assist in maintaining hospital cleanliness, prepping exam rooms, and supply inventory management.
- Support receptionist with answering phones, triaging calls, and checking out clients.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor or management.
Hospital Procedures
· Understand the importance of a clean and orderly facility; must clean and organize all areas of the clinic as part of normal job duties.
· Prepare exam rooms and treatment areas for specific procedures.
· Stock exam rooms and treatment areas; following guidelines of the inventory control system.
· Assist veterinarians in all procedures including, but not limited to the following:
- Prepare patients for surgery
- Administer anesthesia
- Monitor anesthesia during surgical procedures, and perform surgical recovery
- Administer fluid therapy
· Properly care for all of the surgical materials and equipment.
· Keep the operating room adequately stocked and prepared for surgery.

CONTROLS OVER WORK

The Registered Veterinary Technician works under the direct supervision of the Practice Manager, who will indicate general assignments, limitations and priorities. Recurring assignments may be performed independently, or among peers. Deviations or unfamiliar situations are referred to the supervisor or Practice Manager. Performance evaluations will be conducted regularly and will be based upon this job description.
Physical effort
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be an employee to successfully perform the primary functions of this job.
- Work requires lifting and carrying animals (will be assisted by other staff members in lifting animals over 40lbs), walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, and bending for extended periods of time.
- Often transports inventory to stock shelves, often handling 30 – 40 lbs.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to the following:

- Animal bites and scratches
- Biological and chemical hazards such as animal waste, cleaning products, etc.
