As a Library Media Specialist, your primary role will be to manage the library/media center and its resources for grades 1-8 while also overseeing the makerspace areas. You will curate a diverse collection of resources, promote literacy, and collaborate with teachers to integrate maker education and project-based learning into their classrooms. Additionally, you will develop and maintain makerspace environments within the library, providing students with opportunities for hands-on exploration and creativity. This role offers a unique blend of traditional library services and innovative maker education, empowering students to become lifelong learners and problem-solvers.
Key Responsibilities:
Library Management (35% of time): Manage all aspects of the library/media center, including collection development, cataloging, circulation, and inventory management for grades 1-8.
Teacher Collaboration (30% of time): Work closely with teachers to identify opportunities for integrating maker education and project-based learning into their curriculum, providing support and resources to enhance student learning experiences. Support teachers and students in implementing project-based learning initiatives, guiding them through the design process and providing resources to facilitate meaningful inquiry and exploration.
Makerspace Development (25% of time): Develop and maintain makerspace areas within the library, selecting tools, equipment, and materials that support hands-on exploration and creativity across various disciplines.
Programming (10%): Develop and promote library programs, resources, and makerspace opportunities through events, displays, newsletters, and social media to engage students, faculty, and parents. This includes the yearly Scholastic Book Fair.
Qualifications:
- Experience working in a school library or educational setting, with a focus on library management and educational technology.
- Familiarity with maker education principles, project-based learning, and instructional design.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and instructional skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, teachers, and administrators.
- Passion for promoting literacy, creativity, and lifelong learning in a diverse and inclusive environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Library Science or related field (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program.
- Certification as a School Library Media Specialist (or eligibility for certification).
- Experience developing and maintaining makerspace environments within a library or educational setting.
- Knowledge of digital fabrication tools, coding platforms, and other maker technologies.
- Experience with community outreach, program development, and grant writing.
