Job Summary:
The Director of Nursing is to direct the daily clinical and business activities, operations, and management of the multi-specialty surgery center located in Montgomery County, MD in accordance with State regulations, Federal regulations, AAAHC accreditation standards and Center policies and procedures.
Areas of Responsibility:
- DON demonstrates competence in patient care in an ambulatory surgery center setting. Pre-admission testing, pre-op, intra-op and phase I and phase II PACU.
- DON serves as an advocate for patients. Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, friends, and families. Promotes patient’s independence by establishing patient care goals; teaching and counseling patients, friends, and family and reinforcing their understanding of disease, medications, and self-care skills. Provides information to patients and health care team by answering questions and requests. Resolves patient needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies.
- Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by monitoring confidential information processing. Maintains documentation of patient care services by auditing patient and department records.
- Ability to act collaboratively in a team environment and support the safe surgical experience for the patient, surgery, nursing, and anesthesia staff.
- Participates actively in the surgery center Quality Committee, Infection Control Committee, Peer Review Committee, and others as needed. Assures that adequate record keeping is done and available in relevant binders.
- Works with the Governing Board, leadership, anesthesia and corporate administration to achieve the clinical and financial goals of the center.
- Maintains the oversight of the material management aspects of the Center. Collaborates with the Governing Board, Surgeons, Director of Perioperative Services and Anesthesia Chief to provide cost effective usage of supplies, equipment, and other vendors. Assures preventative maintenance and good repair of all equipment and instrumentation.
- Serves as Infection Control Officer with proper certification. Maintains and oversees the environmental control of the surgery center suite and maintains Infection Control, Environmental Control, APIC, AAMI, OSHA, CLIA, blood bank and other regulations pertaining to the Center. Maintains a safe and clean working environment by designing and implementing procedures, rules, and regulations, calling for assistance from other health care professionals. Protects patients and employees by developing and interpreting infection-control policies and protocols, enforcing medication administration, storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations. Obtains additional infection control training. Serves as day-to-day infection control professional.
- Oversees the staffing of the surgery center and works towards having an educated, qualified consistent, and clinically capable staff. Oversees clinical competencies for staff and holds in-services as needed. Maintains staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training nurses and auxiliary staff. Maintains staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees, planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
- Utilizes information from patient satisfaction surveys to continually improve the Center's operations. This includes surveys of patients and their families as well as surgeons and anesthesiologists.
- The DON is actively engaged in state associations for ambulatory surgery centers and other professional organizations in order to bring current, evidence-based standards of practice to the Center.
- The DON is knowledgeable about the Ambulatory standards as defined in the MD Administrative Code and works consistently towards meeting those standards.
- The DON is visible in the daily operations of the Center and assures that the schedule for that day is accomplished in a timely manner as well as planning for the next surgical day.
- The DON is a customer service representative within the Center and participates in marketing the Center when requested from the Owner or designee.
- The DON is a leader and as such is proactive, approachable, and focused on raising the bar of the Center's accomplishments.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Previous leadership in a Surgical Setting or Ambulatory Surgery Center required.
LICENSE / CERTIFICATIONS: Current RN license in the state of practice is preferred.
Certified in Basic and Advanced Life Support (BLS/ACLS) is preferred.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or Management, advanced degree (MSN/MBA) preferred. Experience: Minimum 2 years' experience as Administrator, Director of Nursing in a Multispecialty Ambulatory Surgery Center. Strong knowledge of state, regulatory, CMS, AAAHC and Joint Commission accrediting requirements. Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate activities of clinical and business operations of the facility. Direct, monitor, and evaluate activities to ensure professional medical/nursing care for each patient. Develop/implement entity specific policies and procedures affecting daily operations. Develop, direct, evaluate, and administer financial, administrative, and personnel policy, procedures, and standards of conduct. Provide direction for evaluation of all facility programs and committee activities, including but not limited to the Quality Management Improvement, Risk Management, Safety, Infection Control, and delegate responsibilities to appropriate personnel. Monitor/review performance evaluations of all employees. Monitor/review appropriate scheduling/staffing activities of patients, physicians, and personnel to ensure quality of services and cost effectiveness. Provide direction for employee training and motivation. Monitor/provide assistance in the credentialing process. Develop/monitor guidelines and standards for assuring compliance with state licensure, CMS, federal regulations (OSHA, CLIA, etc.) and accreditation. Oversee the activities of recruiting, selection, supervision, and counseling of personnel. Provide appropriate personnel/resources to conduct Center activities. Provide a safe environment for all customers and employees by implementing preventative maintenance programs. Perform other administrative duties as delegated or assigned by the Board. Infection Control Training. Serves as day-to-day infection control professional.
Working Conditions:
- Requires intermittent sitting, standing, and walking. Lifting and pushing of light to medium objects.
- Works in clean well-lighted and ventilated environment with no apparent direct exposure to physical hazards.
