GENERAL DEFINITION
Supports Franklin County’s youth athletic program by creating a safe and positive environment for players to learn new skills, develop self-confidence and build character. The position is primarily responsible for supervising and supporting volunteer coaches to enable them to effectively teach kids the fundamentals of the sport and the qualities of good sportsmanship through friendly competition, teamwork, and physical activity. Duties include recruiting, training, evaluating, assigning, and recognizing volunteer coaches. Work is conducted both at practice and game locations during evenings and weekends as well as during traditional office hours.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Athletics and Aquatics Manager or designee.
TYPICAL TASKS
- Recruits volunteer coaching staff;
- Provides training and support for volunteer coaches;
- Attends Youth Sports practices and games to support and evaluate coaches;
- Enforces and/or recommends changes to policies and procedures for assigned programs;
- Assist in misconduct situations;
- Handles emergency or crisis situations;
- Provide documentation to the Athletics Manager concerning evaluations, misconduct, player or spectator ejections, accident reports or any other written reports:
- Interacts resourcefully with various groups and individuals, such as patrons, participants, staff, etc.;
- Responds professionally to comments or concerns from the public;
- Schedules appropriate clinics and trainings for all volunteer coaches;
- Maintains files, records, reports and documents;
- Collects and interprets data for records and reports;
- Provides frontline customer service;
- Checks and reviews a variety of data for accuracy, completeness and conformance to established standards;
- Assists in program registrations utilizing registration software;
- Other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Demonstrate professionalism in a public setting and have the ability to show confidence in conflict management. Make objective decisions based on the facts. Possess excellent oral and written skills. Establish effective working relationships with others. Possess knowledge of athletics and officiating sports. Ability to type, utilize computer programs including Microsoft Office; Follow written and oral instruction.
TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, preference given to applicants with a degree in recreation or similar field.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RELATED OBLIGATIONS
Ability to work with others in a positive and professional manner. Ability to work evenings and weekends.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to occasionally lift 30 pounds, stand for long periods of time and navigate mixed terrain. Most work is in an outside environment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is generally performed in an outside field environment.
