Overview of the Role
The job of an ENL educator at The Bronx Charter School for Children is as diverse as the students she/he serves. These teachers help students from different grade levels, spanning grades from 5th-8th grade. Because students come from many backgrounds, ESL teachers must possess keen observation skills and the ability to tailor instruction to meet each student's individual needs. Lessons focus on vocabulary development, fluency, articulation and comprehension.
Major Performance Expectations
- Screens Home Language Surveys, and provides assistance to incoming families/office staff as needed;
- Administers and/or assists in the administration of required language proficiency and academic achievement tests for determining placement for students, along with ongoing monitoring of student progress;
- Develops language acquisition support plans (ELL plans) for all ELL students and works with classroom teachers to implement plans;
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques and teaching strategies to meet different levels of readiness and interests of students, including whole group (co-teaching)/ small-group or individual learning;
- Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis, provides progress reports as required, and communicates with parents while also providing families with opportunities for socialization and acculturation;
- Use systematic and valid data collection procedures to measure effectiveness of language acquisition supports in order to evaluate the impact on student achievement;
- Creates and maintains a classroom environment that is conducive to learning, promoting high levels of student engagement;
- Advises teachers on modifying/accommodating curriculum for ENL students and share best practices to ensure high quality instruction;
- Collaborates with other BCSC staff, instructional leaders and to discuss student work and efficacy of interventions;
- Communicates regularly with teachers, families and students about progress; and
- Accepts ultimate responsibility for the academic progress of his or her students, and work to actively overcome setback
Leadership Expectations
- Provides support and continuous staff development focused on: academic language demands involved in grade-level teaching and learning, and the background knowledge of ELLs, including their language proficiency profiles, in planning differentiated language teaching;
- Collaborates with and coaches teachers on the use of assessment data to plan instruction; analyzes school literacy data and plan for future literacy needs.
Professional Development Expectations
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence through job-embedded coaching and professional development trainings/workshops, and research based inquiry;
- Participates in discussions or activities focused on using research to improve reading skills; and
- Participates in staff development focused on the design of effective learning paths, and on differentiation.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $60,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
