Lead Teacher Job Description
STATEMENT OF JOB
The Lead Teacher coordinates the implementation of a curriculum that promotes the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of Daycare/Head Start children. The Lead Teacher encourages parent involvement in all aspects of the program and their child’s education. To develop individual goals for children transitioning into the program, The Lead Teacher provides ongoing observation and assessment of progress and facilitates the transition into kindergarten—reports to the Educational Director.
QUALIFICATIONS
New Graduates with a BA/BS in Early Childhood Education or a related field or a willingness to enter Study Plans to complete a degree in Early Childhood Education), or MA/MS in Early Childhood Education. New York State Certification N-6, New York State Initial Professional Certification, or New York State Professional Certification Birth-Grade 2 (Professional Certification mandates 30 hours of Professional Development every five years)
Two years of teaching experience and/or supervised student teaching is preferred. Physical Requirement: A physical examination (including screening for tuberculosis) to show that the individual does not pose a risk to the safety and health of others because of communicable diseases.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
I. Classroom
- Plan and implement the educational program for children by using a Creative Curriculum and other resources.
- Develop and utilize lesson plans that reflect mandated elements and parental and cultural influences, as well as promote the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of Head Start children.
- Individualize one-to-one and group activities to reflect the unique needs and strengths of all children in the classroom, including those at risk, those with special needs, those who are gifted, and those who are culturally diverse.
- Follow a consistent schedule, which includes small and large group experiences, choice time, music and movement, large and small motor activities, language and literacy, problem-solving, two or three daily meals, and effective transition between activities.
- Encourage experimentation, exploration, cooperation, and socialization; ask open-ended questions and listen respectfully to the answers.
- Provide an atmosphere that promotes and reinforces parental involvement in the classroom.
- Work with other staff and resources, such as speech, occupational, physical, and psychological therapists and nutritionists, to develop specialized planning for children and families.
- Supervise and monitor children at all times.
- Respond to crises or emergencies that may occur. Provide first aid or CPR, prevent the spread of blood-borne pathogens, and access emergency services as needed.
- Accompanies children on trips.
- Supervises Assistant Teachers and Volunteers in the classroom.
- Participates in case conferences.
- Hold parent-teacher conferences.
- Maintain accurate written records, including assessments, special education documentation, screening instruments, anecdotal observations, family contacts, lesson plans, monthly reports, form 10s, documents for transition to public school, parent/teacher conferences, and other required forms. All communications are potentially sensitive and are subject to Head Start’s policy on confidentiality.
II. Services
- Participate in regularly scheduled team meetings with the educational director and family worker to plan for and deliver collaborative services across all components.
- Meet regularly with parents and other staff regarding each child’s status and progress.
- Conduct required home visits to assess support and share information on parenting, educational strategies, and classroom progress.
- Plan and conduct regular parent meetings with team members.
- Schedule two parent/teacher conferences yearly – Fall and Spring
- Assist in recruitment efforts.
- Attend In-Service Training
- Attend meetings, trainings, and appropriate professional development activities.
- General maintenance and security of classroom
- Assist in inventory of all site equipment.
IV. Perform duties outside this job description when required to deliver services to children and families efficiently.

Salary: $49,000.00 - $75000 per year

Education:
- Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education with New York State Professional Certification Birth-Grade 2
- Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education with New York State Professional Certification Birth-Grade 2
- BA Degree in a Related Field with a Study Plan (Required)
