Duties:
As a dedicated Personal Support Specialist (PSS) in Maine, your primary responsibilities will involve providing compassionate and personalized care to individuals in need. This includes assisting with daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, and grooming. Monitoring and administering medications, as well as maintaining a clean and safe living environment for clients, are integral aspects of the role. Additionally, you will collaborate with healthcare professionals to create and implement individualized care plans, ensuring the well-being and independence of your clients.
Responsibilities:
- Perform tasks assigned by the Supervisor.
- Report in writing, on agency forms, to the Supervisor on each client assignment.
- Promptly reports any significant changes observed or reported in the client’s condition.
- Confer as required with the Supervisor regarding client’s progress.
- Provide Personal Care services which may include assistance with bathing, getting in and out of bed, teeth, mouth, denture and hair care, assistance with mobility and ambulation including use of walker, cane or crutches, changing of bed and laundering the bed linens and personal clothing skin care excluding wound care, care of glasses and hearing aids, assistance with dressing and undressing, toileting, including use and care of bedpan, urinal, commode, toilet, light cleaning in essential areas of the home during personal care activities, meal prep, food purchasing, meal serving, simple transfers, including bed to chair or wheelchair and reverse, accompanying the client to obtain medical diagnosis and treatment, other delegated tasks by the Management/Nurses.
- Follow universal precautions/proper infection control when providing client service.
- Maintain client confidentiality per HIPAA and Agency policy guidelines.
- Perform ONLY tasks specified for each individual client on the service plan.
- Follow emergency procedures in the event of any medical or non-medical situations.
- Follow client rights at all times.
- Record each activity performed on each case on a daily basis.
- Report any incidents immediately to the Supervisor.
- Submit Daily Activity Sheets and record accurately on a timely basis (weekly).
- Follow instructions, is punctual and is at work as scheduled.
- Follow all agency policy and procedures.
- Attend in-service education annually per agency policy.

Personal Support Specialists in Maine may be required to work variable hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to accommodate client schedules. Physical stamina is important, as the role involves assisting clients with mobility and other daily activities. Work environments may vary, from private residences to healthcare facilities, necessitating adaptability. The position may also involve exposure to different client situations, requiring sensitivity and flexibility in approach.
Must be able to travel to prospective client’s place of residence.
Must be able to hear and effectively communicate in English.
Qualifications:
Prefer a High school diploma or equivalent.
PSS Certificate or able to get PSS Certificate within 9 months and start the class within 2 months of being hired.
Prefer one (1) year experience in the care of clients.
Shows an interest and concern for people, good judgment and tact in dealing with the sick.
Practices good hygiene and is neat in personal appearance.
Speaks, reads, and writes and able to communicate effectively in English.
Current CPR certification preferred.
Must have a comprehensive background check (include criminal check).
Equipment:
As a Personal Support Specialist (PSS) in Maine, proficiency with various types of equipment is crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of clients. This includes the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and masks, especially in situations where infection control is paramount. Additionally, familiarity with mobility equipment like wheelchairs and walkers is essential, as you may be assisting clients with limited mobility. Knowledge and proper handling of medical equipment, such as oxygen tanks and blood pressure cuffs, are also integral to the role. Adherence to safety protocols and the ability to troubleshoot and maintain this equipment is imperative for providing effective care. Ongoing training and updates on the proper usage of equipment will be provided to enhance your competency in delivering high-quality care.
