Summary of Principal Responsibilities
The Robert Andrew Stuart Fellowship provides a unique opportunity to develop organizing and facilitation skills within AFSC's Emerging Leaders for Liberation (ELL) while also making an impact on the lives of young people in Philadelphia. Fellowship duties will be split between AFSC’s Philadelphia Engagement work and the ELL program.
This Fellowship is designed as a comprehensive and immersive learning experience. The selected Fellow will be given a unique opportunity to gain hands-on skills in grassroots youth organizing and youth leadership development.
The Fellow will assist with the implementation of AFSC’s ELL program. The Fellow will participate in program facilitation and curriculum development, and will learn alongside other young adults across the US through the process of developing and building individual and collective social justice initiatives, as well as networking and coalition building.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
The key responsibilities of the Robert Andrew Stuart Fellow include the following.
Within AFSC’s Emerging Leaders for Liberation (ELL) Programs:
- Support the Director in planning and implementing ELL efforts.
- Develop strategies to incorporate creative, cultural, and artistic components that center on self-care, creative expression, and healing justice in training spaces.
- Participate in the program facilitation and curriculum development.
- Attend AFSC Youth Network meetings and give regular updates on their work.
- Support networking and partnerships with AFSC youth programs, Quaker colleges, and Quaker meetings.
- Participate in advisory committee meetings, other ELL network calls and conversations. Help support other administrative, fundraising, and planning aspects of the ELL.
- Submit quarterly reports to supervisor
Within AFSC’s Philadelphia Engagement work:
- Support AFSC’s engagement strategy with Philadelphia youth organizing activities.
- Represent AFSC at appropriate public events and venues, engaging constituencies including youth about the work and activities of AFSC.
- Coordinating with Quaker youth activities in Philadelphia, local Friends schools, and Quaker colleges.
- Complete an active research project in coordination with colleagues across AFSC on understanding the range of Philadelphia-based youth social justice and organizing activities, especially in preparation for AFSC’s proposed Nobel Laureates event in 2027.
- Additional duties as assigned by AFSC’s public engagement director.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Baccalaureate degree in social justice or related field; or equivalent work experience.
Experience:
- A minimum of one year, either as intern, volunteer, or paid staff, with youth organizing programs or youth leadership development.
- Familiarity with and demonstrated interest in community organizing and engagement, training. and youth programs work as it relates to social justice.
- Comfortable with all MS Office programs.
- Ability to research and condense information to share with others.
- Willingness to meet with and develop relationships with young adults from diverse backgrounds and communities in the U.S.
- Interest in issues facing young people in the Philadelphia area or more nationally.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, working both independently and in team settings.
- Demonstrated commitment to Social Justice and Equity.
- Experience and comfort working with young adults ages 16-25.
- Experience and comfort with various artistic media, social media and/or healing self-care techniques and practices preferred.
- Knowledge of diverse cultures, demographics, backgrounds, and history.
- Has a regular self-care practice of one's own.
- Excellent outreach and communications skills.
Other Required Skills and Abilities:
- Updated PA Act 33 & 34 clearances and the FBI fingerprint clearances required at start date.
- Availability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional weekends and evenings.
- An ability to work independently and take initiative. Some office work is balanced with work from home and/or nontraditional workspaces.
- Commitment to Quaker values and testimonies. Understanding of and compatibility with the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee including non-violence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.
- Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations of AFSC in regard to issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender and sexual orientation, and disabilities.
- Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff.
Compensation: $40,000 per year – Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, accident and salary continuation insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker’s compensation and social security.
