SUMMARY:

The Mining Manager is responsible for ensuring that there are sufficient long-term

reserves of clay minerals of the correct quality and quantity to meet the needs

of the Gonzales plant site. This includes all the clay mineral deposits operated by BYK

USA and some of the clay minerals purchased from sources outside of BYK USA. For

clay deposits operated by BYK USA, the Mining Manager is responsible for designing

and managing exploration projects, managing mine-control drilling operations, managing

mining operations, directing mine and hauling contractors. For clay purchased from

outside suppliers, the Mining Manager works with R&D, Purchasing and existing

suppliers and identifies alternate suppliers as needed.

DUTIES:

Mineral Deposits Operated by BYK USA:

Work with the Production and R&D departments to identify clay minerals that are needed for existing or new products.
Identify areas with potential deposits for clay minerals that have been identified.
Negotiate with the owners of the land (private, state, or federal) for access for exploration.
Design and manage exploration projects to determine if clay minerals of the required quality and quantity are present.
Work with the QE and R&D departments to have core samples tested for the parameters required for the specific clay mineral in the deposit.
Working with the QE and R&D departments, interpret the testing results.
Use the driller’s logs and testing results, define the extent of the deposit and determine if an economic deposit is present.
If an economic deposit is found, negotiate with the landowner (private, state, or federal) to obtain a lease agreement, working with the Corporate Counsel and Purchasing Department.
Work with the EHS Department to obtain all required environmental permits.
Work with Corporate Counsel or outside attorneys to obtain any other required local, state, and federal permits.
Design and manage mine-control project(s) to define the extent of the deposit and aid in the development of a mine plan.
Develop mine plans to extract the clay in the most economic way possible while adhering to all environmental of other permits. The mine plan should be designed to meet the quantity and quality needs of the production facility.
Identify mining contractor(s) to extract the clay and develop contractual agreements as need working with the Purchasing Department.
Provide oversight for the stripping of overburden and extraction of clay minerals.
Maintain stockpiles of the clay to meet the short-term needs of the production facility.
Identify hauling contractors and develop agreements as needed working with the Purchasing Department.
Arrange to have the clay minerals hauled to Gonzales to meet the needs of the facility.
Prepare all reports required local, state, and federal entities for minerals located on land owned by state or federal government.

Minerals Purchased from Outside Suppliers:

Work with the Production and R&D departments to identify clay minerals that are needed for existing or new products.
Identify vendors that have mines producing the desired clay and request samples for evaluation by R&D.
Visit vendors to determine if they are technically capable to mine to the desired specifications and that they have sufficient reserves to cover the need. This includes the vendor’s laboratory capability to be able to determine if the clay meets the minimum specification.
Work with the vendor and R&D to agree to specifications and testing frequency.
Work with Purchasing to develop a purchase agreement, if applicable.
With existing vendors, develop a working relationship with the representative and, if allowed by vendor, the mining manager and laboratory manager.
Visit existing vendors as needed, for major vendors visit once per year.
Work with vendor as much as possible to develop the ability to supply clay in sufficient quantity and quality to meet the needs of the plant.
Collect samples from vendor stockpiles as applicable and work with QE and R&D to approve stockpiles for use.
If applicable, work with vendor to identify reserves that have the qualities needed to meet the needs of the plant. This may include drilling programs at the vendors reserves or reviewing core samples from vendor drilling programs.
Be the point of contact with clay vendors for issues involving quality specifications and/or quantity.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree required in Geology or Mining Engineering or related experience. Master’s degree preferred.
Minimum 5 years of experience with exploration, mining, and sourcing minerals.
Expertise in economic geology, mineralogy, geochemistry, and mine-reclamation.
Experience with drilling and coring techniques.
Experience with mining practices associated with open-pit mining.
Experience environmental and other regulations associated with mining sites.
Ability to interpret Laboratory reports, including common analytical methods used for clay minerals such as XRD.
Experience with Microsoft Office software including Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
Experience with modeling software associated with reserve calculations and open pit mine design.
Experience reading and understanding contracts, including mineral leases and purchase agreements.
Experience with federal mine claims.
Experience supervising employees and contractors.
Experience with bulk transport of minerals.
Ability to work in cross-functional teams and collaborate effectively in a matrix organization.
Approximately 30% business travel involved, including international travel.
