POSITION OVERVIEW

The Email Marketing Manager will work as an integral part of the Digital Content team as we strive to increase public awareness of the Memorial, Museum, and its mission; reach new audiences with the story and significance of 9/11; generate fundraising support; and update the 9/11 community on a range of relevant programs, exhibitions, events, and news. This role will focus primarily on overseeing the creation, approval, deployment, automation, and metric reporting of email communications supporting departments across the organization including Retail, Education, Government & Community Affairs, Public Programs, and Institutional Advancement.

The organization is in the process of a Salesforce migration. Initially, the role will heavily involve the email marketing platform iContact, which requires a working knowledge of similar platforms like Constant Contact, Mailchimp, or Hubspot. As we transition away from Contact this summer, the ideal candidate will also need a solid familiarity with Salesforce.

The Marketing & Communications team is a highly collaborative group that frequently works together on interrelated projects. As part of the team, the Email Marketing Manager will contribute to digital content planning overall, ensuring that outgoing emails are timed to complement and bolster not just each other but relevant website updates, social media posts, and publicity materials. This individual will also be responsible for managing the email portion of the team’s editorial calendar.

This role reports to the Vice President of Digital Content and Strategy but will work closely with everyone on the Communications & Marketing team as well as with staff across the organization at different levels of seniority. It is a hybrid role allowing for both remote and on-site work at our lower Manhattan office.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

Serve as gatekeeper for departments across the organization who have email marketing needs, and as the go-to for email components of all marketing and communications initiatives.
Traffic and obtain all necessary email assets, including photographs, copyright information, and approvals.
Execute campaigns with a focus on journeys, automations, and engagement.
Write, create, deploy, and track success of individual emails.
Maintain and manage audience of more than 500,000 and implement data hygiene processes.
Work closely with external marketing agencies to ensure a consistent voice and messaging, and to facilitate a seamless process for the review and approval of materials.
Co-management, with team, of our content calendar, which includes scheduled email outreach, blog posts, website updates, social media, and media relations.
Work with colleagues across the organization on integrating, streamlining, and improving current workflows to better reach both past and potential donors and general audiences through email.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILL REQUIREMENTS

Bachelors preferred.

Thorough understanding of best email practices:

o 3-5+ years of experience writing, editing, and deploying external and internal emails from start to finish, preferably at a non-profit or mission-driven organization

o Knowledge of Salesforce and at least one similar platform (Constant Contact, HubSpot, Mailchimp)

o Proficiency in HTML & CSS for email design and customization

Excellent verbal communication and writing skills, the ability to translate goals into powerful copy, and to extrapolate from abstract ideas into actionable plans.
Attention to detail and eagle-eyed proofreading skills.
Outgoing, can-do personality and comfort interacting with staff at all levels of the organization, from executive management to volunteers.
Sensitivity to difficult storytelling.
Ability to pivot quickly and handle fast-paced and rapidly evolving projects.
Familiarity with the history of the February 26, 1993 and September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Assists with other special projects and events in support of all 9/11 Memorial and Museum, as assigned.
